If the trunk were to open without use of the electric trunk release or the key cylinder being turned, the alarm would sound. When the key cylinder was turned, a rod from the cylinder to the latch opened it.

I had unlocked the card and opened the trunk, put items in the trunk and shut the trunk with my keyfob inside. the Trunk would not open using the pad outside. It's easy: 2 plastic rivets at rear of door, 1 bolt behind plastic cover inside the pull handle, 2 screws inside door pull cup under rubber, unsnap a bunch of fasteners around the edge and at "sail" panel next to mirror.
