I did install hydrostatic steering, but over all it is one stronger puller. Comfortable to drive and very quiet. The brakes are very excellent, as good as my 4020 of the same age. At the end of the wire there should be a handle (76), or just a ring, attached. You attach the implement and back the tractor to push the link ends into locked position. Clearly, you are missing the handle for the wire. If nothing else is missing, the problem could be rust and dirt inside. Take the thing apart and examine it.

The hydraulic pump and PTO driveshaft is splined into a hub on the flywheel. When these splines fail it rarely makes noise. I would drain the fluid from the rear housing, then remove the hydraulic pump. Noise could be coming from something related to the PTO clutch and/or pump drive gears.
