783. My 783 is in great shape as well. My only hangups is the grooves where a scope clamps on are so very small a scope will not attach. My Henry rifle has deep grooves so no problem but the Marlin simply will not hold a scope. Don't want to drill and tap so it's open sights for me.

Matt_H. Probably the most important difference is the safety. On the 783, the safety is applied by pushing forward. On the 883, the safety is applied by pulling to the rear. So the trigger assembly is different. This could also mean the other internals are different too. The stocks could also be different.
