The timing comes down to practice and "feeling", don't go too close to the ledge to avoid diving straight down, there's a "sweet spot" you'll have to find as your fail a few times.

Four ways to skate with eager edge that I'm aware of: Basic skate, works on all classes. Jump, light attack, swap weapon immediately to preserve momentum.
