If they learned enough to start building carts then they will want more money.

Villagers will only recognize water available in: - Food storage. It is best to have all of the water here. - Their own house chest. Just for the resident of the house. They will consume here first. Water production: you will also need a resource storage to store empty bucket and waterskin.

Firewood counts more for the "wood" demand than logs. Put workers in the barn as Farmer and Field Worker. Field workers do not require any skills (not even farming skill) but Farmers do. Make sure you have farm fields built, appropriate seeds, and plenty of fertilizer.
