The Trunk relay #36 in the trunk fuse box is the cause. There are 3 of these relays; Parklamps 27, Trunk 36 and Fuel Pump 37. I swapped 36 with 27 and 37 which both fixed the trunk but the bad trunk relay would not work the lights or fuel pump. I am buying a new relay tomorrow, cost is about $20. OK, the latch isn't closing any more. I believe it needs the other 2 wires hooked up for the body computer to know if the lid's open or closed, or if it's in 'lock' or 'unlock' position. I tried ohming things out, and checking voltage when I pushed the trunk release button, and lock/unluck, etc.

They could have kept it as-is by just adding a manual release behind the left rear seatback. But as a bean counter would say, that adds cost, too. '11 LTZ, born Aug 2010, Fairfax, KS. Nothing! Pushes trunk button and it opens. Drive home and to experiment puts in park, put key in accessory position and press fob trunk release. Nothing! Seems like the fob will not open the trunk if there is a key in the vehicle and in the accessory position.
