My 1897 has no serial number...only the letters WRACO (which I assume stand for Winchester Repeating Arms Company) on the receiver where the serial number is usually found. It also has a steel butt plate (really soaks up recoil!).Did read a nice article on the Model 9422 ,on line sometime ago.It gave an over view of the models and their introduction.
